AI Alt-Text Generation

Automatically generate SEO-optimized image descriptions

What is Alt-Text?

Alt-text (alternative text) is a description of an image that helps:

  • SEO - Search engines understand your images for better rankings
  • Accessibility - Screen readers describe images to visually impaired users
  • Fallback - Text displays if images fail to load

How AI Generation Works

AutoWebp uses advanced AI (powered by OpenAI) to analyze your product images and generate contextual, SEO-optimized alt-text. The AI considers:

  • Product title and category
  • Visual elements in the image
  • SEO best practices
  • Character length optimization

Smart Product Grouping

Efficiency Feature: When generating alt-text for multiple images of the same product, AutoWebp generates one description and reuses it for all variant images. This saves API calls and ensures consistency across your product listings.

Using AI Alt-Text

  1. Navigate to AI Alt-Text in the app sidebar
  2. Toggle "Show only images missing alt text" to filter
  3. Select images individually or use "Select All Missing"
  4. Click "Generate Selected" to start AI generation
  5. Review generated alt-text in the image cards
  6. Edit manually if needed by clicking the edit button

Alt-Text Best Practices

  • Keep descriptions concise (125 characters or less)
  • Include relevant keywords naturally
  • Describe what's in the image specifically
  • Avoid starting with "Image of..." or "Picture of..."
  • Include product name and key features

Example Alt-Text

BEFORE (Generic):
IMG_4523.jpg
AFTER (AI-Generated):
"Customizable Leather Floor Mats with Diamond Pattern for BMW M3 (2020-2024)"

SEO Filename Optimization

Transform image URLs for better search rankings

Why Filenames Matter for SEO

Search engines use image filenames as a ranking signal. A descriptive, keyword-rich filename helps Google understand your image content and can improve your visibility in image search results.

Automatic Filename Generation

When you optimize images, AutoWebp automatically generates SEO-friendly filenames based on:

  • Product title
  • Key product attributes
  • URL-safe formatting (lowercase, hyphens)
  • WebP extension for modern format indication

Filename Format

BEFORE:
DSC_0042_final_v2.jpg
AFTER:
leather-floor-mats-diamond-pattern-bmw-m3.webp

SEO Best Practices Applied

  • Lowercase letters - URL consistency
  • Hyphens as separators - Better readability for search engines
  • No special characters - Universal compatibility
  • Descriptive keywords - Relevant search terms
  • Reasonable length - Not too long, not too short

Common issues and solutions

Images Not Being Optimized

Possible causes:

  • Monthly limit exceeded - check your usage on the Dashboard
  • Unsupported image format - we support JPG, PNG, GIF
  • Image already optimized - check the "Optimized" tab

Solution: Refresh the app, check your usage limits, and try selecting fewer images at once.

Alt-Text Not Generating

Possible causes:

  • AI service temporarily unavailable
